How to Extract RAR Files Without WinRAR
You don't need WinRAR to extract a RAR file. Every major platform has a free or built-in route instead.
Get an archive tool for your computer
Download the installer and start opening RAR, ZIP and 7z archives in a few minutes.
WinRAR is only required for creating RAR archives or using its specific repair and recovery-record features. Extracting an existing RAR file can be done entirely with free tools, and on current Windows, with no extra software at all.
Windows 11
Windows 11 can extract RAR archives natively, without installing anything, following a 23H2-era update that added libarchive-based support to File Explorer. Right-click the file and choose Extract All.
Windows 10
Install a free tool such as 7-Zip or PeaZip, then right-click the RAR file and choose the extract option from the context menu.
macOS
macOS Archive Utility does not support RAR. Install The Unarchiver or Keka, both free, and double-click the RAR file to extract it.
Linux
Most distributions can install unrar or unar through their package manager, or use a graphical tool like PeaZip. From a terminal, extracting is typically a single command using the installed utility.
Mobile
Dedicated archive apps and some file-manager apps in the major mobile app stores can extract RAR files without needing a desktop tool.
