RAR Files

What to Expect When Downloading a RAR File

Downloading a RAR file is just the first step — the archive still needs to be extracted, and a few common download issues can prevent that.

When you click a download link for a .rar file, your browser saves the compressed archive to your Downloads folder, but nothing inside it is usable yet. That's expected — a RAR archive is meant to be extracted after downloading, not opened directly like a document.

Why the downloaded file won't open right away

Double-clicking a .rar file either extracts it or opens a viewer, depending on what's installed — it does not directly launch the files inside. If nothing happens, or an unrelated program opens, you likely need an extractor installed. See how to open a RAR file for platform-specific steps.

Scanning downloads for safety

Incomplete or interrupted downloads

  • If a download is interrupted partway through, the resulting .rar file is incomplete and typically fails to extract with a corruption or "unexpected end of archive" error.
  • Compare the downloaded file's size to the size listed on the source page, if available, before assuming the extractor is at fault.
  • Re-downloading the file is usually the fastest fix for a truncated download. See corrupted RAR file for further diagnostics.

Browsers renaming or altering downloaded files

Some browsers or security software append text to a downloaded file's name, or in rare cases block the download of an archive entirely if it trips a security heuristic. If a downloaded file has an unexpected extension like .rar.zip or .rar.download, check the actual completed name in your Downloads folder or download manager, and rename it back to end in .rar only if you're confident about the source.

Multi-part downloads

Some sources split a large archive into several files to download, such as archive.part1.rar and archive.part2.rar. All parts need to be downloaded into the same folder before extraction will work — see multi-part RAR files for details.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my downloaded .rar file not fully save?

This typically happens when a connection drops mid-download. Check the file size against the source, and re-download if it looks short.

Is a RAR file more dangerous to download than a regular file?

Not inherently. Compression doesn't add malware. But because an archive can hide multiple files at once, only download from sources you trust and scan the archive before opening anything inside.

My downloaded RAR file opens as a webpage or text file instead of an archive. What happened?

This can happen if the download link actually served an error page instead of the real file. Try downloading again, and confirm the file size is reasonable for the content it should contain.
