WinRAR Not Opening or Responding

If WinRAR itself won't launch, freezes, or closes immediately, that's different from a single archive failing to open. Here's how to tell them apart and fix the program.

Is it the program or just one file?

First confirm the scope of the problem: try opening a different, known-good archive, or launch WinRAR directly from the Start menu instead of by double-clicking a file. Common causes and fixes

• Conflicting shell extensions — other archive tools (like 7-Zip) installed alongside WinRAR sometimes conflict over right-click menu entries, which can cause a hang specifically when opening via right-click. Try launching WinRAR directly instead, or check each program's option to disable its shell integration.
• A pending Windows update — Windows sometimes needs a restart to finish applying updates that affect how applications launch. Restart and try again.
• A corrupted installation — files needed by WinRAR may have been partially removed or damaged. Reinstalling (see below) resolves most of these cases.
• User profile issues — if WinRAR works for one Windows user account but not another on the same PC, the problem is specific to that profile's settings rather than the installation itself.
